York® Affinity™ UVC Germicidal Light

Get Rid of That ‘Dirty Sock' with York® Affinity™ UVC Germicidal Light
New IAQ Solution from Johnson Controls Eliminates Microbial Organisms

NORMAN, OKLA. - (November 13, 2008) - Johnson Controls (www.johnsoncontrols.com) is expanding its York® Affinity™ Series of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) solutions with the introduction of a UVC germicidal light.

The York Affinity UVC germicidal light, installed inside heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, eliminates foul odors caused by microbial organisms (mold and fungus) that grow in wet evaporator sections of HVAC units. As a result, the ultraviolet (UV) lamp improves IAQ and increases unit performance.

Not only do mold and fungus cause foul odors, otherwise known as the "Dirty Sock" syndrome, but microbial organisms also restrict airflow and limit the heat transfer capability, which increases the operating cost of the equipment. The York Affinity UVC germicidal light irradiates areas inhabited by the organisms, making it impossible for them to survive. So, as the organisms disappear, the odors and IAQ complaints also disappear.

Many commercially available UVC lights are designed for optimal performance at room temperature and allow significant power reduction at lower temperature. However, lights of this type are not suitable for the damp, cool, moving airstream environment found in HVAC systems. To eliminate contaminants in HVAC systems, the UVC light must be able to provide maximum dosage of UVC energy at 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit in a rapidly moving airstream, which is exactly what the York Affinity UVC high output, low temperature duty germicidal light is designed to do.

The York Affinity UVC germicidal light uses a blend of inert gases in the bulb and a specialized power supply that maintain the optimal plasma temperature inside the bulb even in a low temperature, moving airstream. This combination results in a UVC lamp that is perfect for an HVAC system. And the mixture of gases creates a bulb which does not produce UV with wavelengths of less than 200 nanometers, meaning the York Affinity UVC germicidal light does not contribute to ozone production.

The York Affinity UVC germicidal light must be changed at, or before, 9,000 hours (approximately twelve months) of operation to maintain design output and to ensure germicidal effectiveness. The York Affinity UVC germicidal light comes equipped with indicator lights on the front panel of the power supply housing that will change from blue to yellow to remind the consumer to contact the installing contractor to change the germicidal light. When the indicator light turns red, the lamp assembly must be replaced to maintain the highest level of performance.

The 115-volt York Affinity dual UVC germicidal kit is currently available for shipment. The single 115-volt and the 208/230-volt UVC germicidal kits, as well as the dual 208/230-volt UVC germicidal kit, will be available for shipment starting in November.

Affinity™ 98 Percent AFUE Modulating Gas Furnaces

York® Affinity™ 98 Percent AFUE Modulating Gas Furnaces
Lower Energy Costs for Homeowners
Customers Can Save Between $70 and $300 During Heating Season

NORMAN, OKLA. - (September 18, 2008) - Johnson Controls (www.johnsoncontrols.com) offers York® 33-inch, variable-speed modulating gas furnaces with electronically commutated motors (ECM) that can achieve up to 98 percent Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE). By choosing a York Affinity™ 98 percent AFUE modulating gas furnace, homeowners can save from $70 to $300 during the heating season, compared to a 96.7 percent AFUE unit.

The actual operating cost will vary depending on the zone, utility rates, usage, square footage of the home and size of the York furnace. 98 percent is the highest AFUE rating in the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning industry (HVAC), according to Andy Armstrong, director of marketing for Unitary Products. He added that the other modulating ECM models in the Unitary Products line go no lower than 97.5 percent AFUE.

What's more, Armstrong noted that all of the company's modulating gas furnaces with permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors have a 97 percent AFUE rating - also an industry first. In addition, all single-stage furnaces are now rated at 95.5 percent AFUE, eclipsing the previous rating of 95 percent AFUE on condensing furnaces.

"With the introduction of this new line of gas furnaces, Johnson Controls is setting the bar on energy efficiency," Armstrong said. "Higher AFUE ratings mean distributors and dealers now have a stronger selling proposition, and homeowners will greatly benefit from lower energy costs during the winter months."

The furnaces appeal to dealers and homeowners searching for efficient heating systems that are easy to install and service in tight spaces while contributing to green, sustainable home design.

The new design also includes the industry's first fully modulating 80 percent AFUE offering that features integrated controls. The controls provide comfort to within one degree of the thermostat setpoint and ensure precise modulation of the gas valve from 50 to 100 percent in one percent increments. Meanwhile, the 97 percent and higher AFUE models modulate from 35 to 100 percent in one percent increments.

In redesigning the furnace line, Johnson Controls reduced the units' height by seven inches and incorporated a variety of features, making the furnaces the ideal solution for applications where space is limited, including closets, attics and basements with low ceilings.

Multiple venting options and the multi-position design provide flexibility for all installations and applications, including upflow, downflow, horizontal left and horizontal right. In addition, the units' unique condensate management system eliminates the need for external traps, which means the furnaces do not need to be elevated in horizontal applications.

Their rugged yet stylish cabinets of folded sheet metal are free of sharp edges, ensuring worry-free service. Moreover, the units' doors are now interchangeable between the top and bottom, based on the desired venting option, and the toolless ¼-turn latches make door removal even easier.

Operation is quiet - as low as 50 decibels (dB) for models with an 80 percent AFUE rating and 47 dB for models up to 98 percent AFUE. All 95 percent and higher AFUE furnaces are ENERGY STAR® qualified. And with new gaskets installed around the doors, the furnaces have a reduced air leakage rate of less than one percent.

Johnson Controls backs every York 95 percent and higher AFUE gas furnace with a lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger, while high-end 80 percent AFUE models come with a limited lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger. Every York model includes a five-year limited warranty on all other components.

New Bypass and Powered Humidifiers

Johnson Controls Adds New Bypass and Powered Humidifiers to its Line
Of York® Home Comfort Products
Humidifiers offer easy installation and high evaporative capacities

NORMAN, OKLA. - (March 14, 2008) - Johnson Controls is adding three new humidifiers to its line of York® home comfort products. This includes small and large bypass humidifiers and a high-capacity, fan-powered humidifier - units for virtually any home with a forced air system.

York humidifiers provide humidity in the form of pure water vapor to prevent minerals from entering the air stream. Water is supplied to a distribution tray and flows evenly across a water panel. Heat from the heating system causes the water to evaporate. Properly humidified air (vapor) is then distributed throughout the entire home. During operation, a constant flushing action occurs which sends mineral leftover from evaporation to a drain at the bottom of each humidifier. This flushing action keeps the unit operating efficiently while keeping maintenance to a minimum, typically once a year. Maintenance is fast and simple and includes cleaning the water distribution system, replacing the water panel and flushing the drain line.

The actual amount of humidity that should be introduced into the home during the winter changes as outdoor temperatures change. Too much humidity in the home when it's very cold can cause window condensation and potentially damage the structure of the home. The optional York automatic humidifier control continually monitors and responds to outdoor temperatures by receiving signals from an outdoor sensor more than 400,000 times per day. This insures optimum levels of humidity throughout the home as outdoor temperature changes occur. Homeowners never have to monitor or change humidity settings or wait until they feel uncomfortable. The automatic set-it-and-forget-it control keeps their home's humidity level exactly where it should be. The control is totally solid state and designed for many years of trouble-free operation.

York whole-home humidifiers are installed out of the living space as part of the heating system, providing quiet operation. Due to their fully automatic operation, there are no messy reservoirs to fill and clean, and frequent maintenance is not required. They humidify the entire home, not just one area as is typical of less efficient portable units.

Both the large and small bypass humidifiers mount easily on the supply plenum or return duct and require a ½-inch drain connection and a minimum static pressure of .2” w.c. to create air flow for evaporation. The units include a manual humidistat, saddle valve and a 24-volt step down transformer, and a scientifically designed water distribution tray keeps water flowing evenly over the water panel for maximum evaporation. The units also offer fast and easy left-right bypass conversion with their reversible housings, nameplate and drain spud/plug features.

York® Affinity™ Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner

Johnson Controls Introduces York® Affinity™ Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner
Unit combines electronic attraction and filter media to provide a consistent, high level of performance

NORMAN, OKLA. - (March 5, 2008) - Johnson Controls introduces the York® Affinity™ Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner, the most efficient whole house air cleaner on the market today.
Because of its revolutionary design that merges electronic and media technology, the Affinity Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner is never less than 94 percent efficient at trapping particles as small as 0.35 micron in size. This patented breakthrough technology creates an electrical field that ionizes the particles, creating a stronger attraction to the air cleaner media, which dramatically increases efficiency. But resistance to air flow is still very low, only 0.14" w.c. at 1200 cfm.
Unlike plate-type electronic air cleaners that lose efficiency over time, the Affinity Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner's special air cleaning media permanently traps particulate to provide a more consistent and higher level of filtration performance throughout the life of the media. This media has a filtering area of 72.3 square feet.
Equivalent to a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) of 16, the Affinity Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner captures 97.8 percent of particles that measure 3 to 10 microns, 95.7 percent of particles measuring 1 to 3 microns and 92.0 percent of those measuring 0.3 to 1 micron, permanently trapping and killing bacteria and spores.
A study conducted by an independent laboratory consistently places the Affinity unit ahead of its competition in terms of removal efficiency when compared at two months, six months and 10 months of operation. The study also reveals that the air cleaner offers maximum filtration performance with consistently less airflow resistance than competitors' models and the longest service life of those that were tested. The unit is rated to 2000 cfm, with measured resistance of 0.14" w.g. at 1200 cfm and 0.29" w.g. at 2000 cfm, the lowest airflow resistance in its class.
Power usage for the UL listed Affinity Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner does not exceed 60 watts. The absence of snapping, often associated with the electronic charge of particles, ensures the unit's silent operation.
Easy maintenance features will also appeal to homeowners. Cells in the Affinity Hybrid Electronic Air Cleaner do not need to be washed or vacuumed. Instead, ionized wires should be wiped and the filter media replaced once per year.
