Johnson Controls Introduces York® LX Series Gas Furnaces Compact 33-inch height makes installation easy in tight spaces

NORMAN, OKLA. - (August 20, 2009) - Johnson Controls (http://www.johnsoncontrols.com), the global multi-industrial leader in energy efficiency, introduces a new line of compact 33-inch furnaces - the York® LX Series of multi-position gas furnaces.

The new furnaces, which qualify for the federal tax credit program, provide heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) dealers with yet another option for selling to homeowners.

Designed for installation in tight spaces, including basements, closets, alcoves, attics, recreation rooms and garages, the units are also ideal for commercial applications. LX Series furnaces feature Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratings as high as 96
percent (80 percent models are also available).

The series includes single-stage models that feature a five-speed, direct-drive, X13-style high-efficiency DC motor that increases SEER ratings in the cooling mode. Two-stage models feature a variable-speed electronically commutated motor (ECM) that circulates air for longer periods of time, equating to consistent temperatures and improved air filtering, resulting in cleaner, more comfortable air. Variable-speed models also include ClimaTrak technology, which provides homeowners with customizable airflow based on the region in which they live.

Like other units in the serie
s, these units employ an induced combustion, reliable hot surface ignition and a high heat transfer aluminized tubular heat exchanger. An insulated blower compartment and quiet inducer operation ensure low noise levels during furnace operation. Indoor air quality is assured thanks to external air filters, and a timed-on, adjustable-off blower on select models delivers maximum comfort to homeowners.

Installation is made easy thanks to the simple multi-position design, solid removable bottom panels that make conversion easy, no knockouts and a patent-pending, self-priming internal condensate trap. Contractors who service the units will appreciate ¼-turn knobs for easy door removal. Units also feature easy access to controls to connect power/control wiring, a fully supported blower assembly for improved access and blower removal, and high-level, self-diagnostics with fault code display.

End users can take advantage of a generous warranty program. 80% AFUE models include a 20-year warranty on the heat exchanger while condensing models include a lifetime warranty on the heat exchanger. When used in a commercial application, the heat exchanger warranty is 10 years on either model. In addition to the heat exchanger warranty, all models also include a 10-year limited parts warranty when the furnace is registered within 90 days of purchase. If registration does not occur in the specified time frame, the parts warranty defaults to five years.

Johnson Controls Donates Energy-Efficient Heating and Cooling System to Kansas Town Damaged by Tornado

Silo Eco-Home Is First Home Completed as Part of Greensburg, Kan.
GreenTown "The Chain of Eco-Homes" Project

GREENSBURG, KS--(Marketwire - August 11, 2009) - Two years after an EF5 tornado leveled the rural town of Greensburg, Kan., residents of the community are touring the first energy-efficient model home constructed as part of The Chain of Eco-Homes project. The first home, known as the Silo Eco-Home, is heated and cooled by an energy efficient York® Affinity™ home comfort system donated by Johnson Controls, Inc. (NYSE: JCI). Using energy efficient systems, the home will reduce energy costs by 60 to 70 percent compared to a traditionally built home of the same size.

The 2,000-square-foot Silo Eco-Home was inspired by the strength and durability of the grain silo that survived the devastating tornado, virtually unscathed. Built with concrete walls and roof, the home incorporates a variety of building techniques, energy efficiency features and green living products and services, including a York Affinity heat pump. The heat pump provides heating and cooling to the home, while an Affinity high-efficiency media air cleaner and an Affinity humidifier quietly deliver 24-hour filtration and humidity.

The Chain of Eco-Homes project will include 12 homes, all using sustainable products. The homes will be available both as information centers and as eco-lodging where visitors can experience green living firsthand. Greensburg GreenTown, a grassroots community-based organization, is organizing the rebuilding process with city and county officials, business owners and local residents.

The energy-efficient York Affinity heating and cooling system will account for as much as 30 percent of the 60 to 70 percent the home is expected to save in energy costs as compared to a more traditional home of the same size.

The heat pump was delivered through cfm Distributors, Inc., Kansas City, and free installation was provided by York contractor Fahnestock Plumbing, HVAC, Electric and Fireplaces, Wichita. The air-source heat pump features:

  • R-410A refrigerant that delivers environmentally-friendly performance with zero ozone depletion;
  • Outstanding efficiency ratings of up to 18 seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and 9.4 heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF). These ratings meet the rebate and efficiency requirements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009;
  • Recognition for its energy efficiency by Good Housekeeping, EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR®.

Fahnestock CEO George Fahnestock expects the York system will account for as much as 30 percent of the home's energy savings.

An energy-efficient York Affinity heat pump provides heating and cooling to the Silo Eco-Home, and an Affinity high-efficiency media air cleaner and an Affinity humidifier quietly deliver 24-hour filtration and humidity to the home as needed.

"Working on the Silo Eco-Home project, we felt a keen responsibility to bring the very best technologies and experience to the table in the hopes of moving our industry and our community toward energy independence," Fahnestock said. "The York Affinity system we installed is one of the most efficient home comfort systems on the market today, ensuring lower operating costs and longer life as well as comfort, quiet and affordability."

Daniel Wallach, executive director and founder of Greensburg GreenTown, echoed Fahnestock's sentiments: "The heating and cooling system is a huge contributor to the overall efficiency goals of the home. Because the system that was installed is such an incredibly efficient system, the efficiency of the home is going to be even better than we anticipated. It's a state-of-the-art system, meaning it's going to demonstrate to people just what's possible and how to heat and cool a 2,200-square-foot home for as little as $50 to $100 per month."

Lee Lindquist, technical projects manager at Fahnestock Plumbing, HVAC, Electric and Fireplaces, added: "As an energy rater certified by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET®), I rated the Silo Eco-Home and helped select the heating and cooling equipment that would operate most efficiently in this particular home. The York Affinity heat pump system that we installed is the most efficient system that's available, so it's definitely going to conserve energy in the home."

Source 1, the aftermarket arm of the Johnson Controls residential heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) brands, introduces the LX Series digital thermostats for residential and commercial applications.

Available for heat pumps or air-conditioning systems in 5+2 (weekday and weekend), 7-day or 1- day programmable and non-programmable models, the easy-to-operate LX thermostats feature a scrolling text display (in English, Spanish or French) and three control buttons. Under the front cover users will find additional options for complete comfort and control, including access to fan, program and outdoor temperature buttons, and the ability to control humidification, dehumidification and reheat.

Source 1 uses an online simulator available at www.source1thermostats.com to demonstrate these and other operational features of the new thermostat.

All standard and advanced programming can be accomplished on a PC using the thermostats' optional USB programmer. In addition, a Comfort Call accessory incorporates wireless technology for remote monitoring and controlling the thermostats from any phone. Precise temperature control is assured with models that average as many as eight indoor/outdoor sensors.

The LX Series thermostats' bi-color LED indicates a cooling or heating mode and features an adjustable backlit panel for different lighting requirements. The customizable panel can display service alerts and error messages along with the contractor's name and phone number when service is needed.
