Johnson Controls Employees Hold Garage Sale, Auction to Benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation®

Donations exceed $5,000 to fund wish for Oklahoma child

NORMAN, OKLA. - (May 15, 2009) - The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Oklahoma will grant a wish to another Oklahoma child, thanks to the generosity of employees at the Johnson Controls-Unitary Products’ manufacturing facility in Norman, Okla. Employees at the plant recently donated more than $5,500 to the nation’s largest wish-granting charity by participating in a garage sale and silent auction at the plant.

According to Brenda Keith, marketing project manager-Unitary Products, the garage sale featured a variety of new and gently used clothing that displayed the York®, Coleman® and Luxaire® brands.

"We had wearables ranging from leather jackets to caps and visors - things that had been worn once or twice at trade shows, sales meetings, etc.," Keith said. "We asked for a minimum donation of $5 for most clothing items and $20 for the heavier outerwear."

This was the fourth consecutive year that the Norman facility hosted the garage sale. "But this was the first time we tied the garage sale to a silent auction," Keith noted. The auction encouraged employees to submit bids for merchandise over a period of five days. Bids were updated daily, giving employees on every shift the opportunity to see the current high bid.

"We were really pleased with the participation of our employees in the bidding process," said Keith. "In all, we received 239 bids. I guess it’s true what they say: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!"

Together, the garage sale and silent auction raised enough money to sponsor the wish of an Oklahoma child living with a life-threatening medical condition. Speaking on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma, Erin Byers, the chapter’s director of development, said, "You did a spectacular job, and we are going to be able to grant another wish of an Oklahoma child as a result of your efforts."

Keith was thrilled with the results and the generosity employees demonstrated.

"One employee lost his $500 bid to a bid for $700," she said. "However, when the winner withdrew his bid, this same employee split the difference between the two bids and increased his bid to $600. He didn’t have to do that, but he told me he wanted to because it was for a good cause.

"I heard that over and over again," she continued. "People told me, ‘This is great because it’s for such a good cause; It’s neat that the money will be used locally; I’m really happy to support this organization; and When are we going to do it again?’"

According to Keith, several employees increased their donation when they picked up their merchandise. "In addition, we had an employee who donated a $100 American Express gift card to the Make-A-Wish organization." These acts of generosity were as important to Keith as the total amount that was donated. "We are really excited at the support shown from the entire facility for this great cause."

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. It is the largest wish-granting charity in the nation, with 66 chapters in the United States and its territories. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes and has granted more than 171,000 heartfelt wishes since 1980.

Earlier this year, Johnson Controls, through its Luxaire brand, signed its third three-year contract with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. This extends the partnership with the nation’s largest wish-granting organization into 2011 and commits $675,000 in contributions over three years.

Luxaire first embarked on a partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2001, agreeing to donate a portion of every sale of a Luxaire product toward its minimum annual contribution of $250,000. Since that time, Luxaire has donated more than $1.75 million to the organization, enough to grant the wishes of 250 children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions.

The Luxaire network of distributors and dealers also works with Make-A-Wish chapters to organize a variety of fundraising activities, including raffles, golf outings and events affiliated with minor league baseball, Central Hockey League and Arena Football League teams. Using money raised by these and other fundraising activities, Luxaire has directly sponsored the wishes of more than 80 children in dealer markets.

Luxaire encourages homeowners to participate in the program by donating all or a portion of product rebates to their local Make-A-Wish chapter during spring and summer promotions of Luxaire brand products. A number of redesigned marketing materials will continue to support the program and raise consumer awareness.

Coleman High-Efficiency HVAC Units are Eligible for Federal Tax Credits

NORMAN, OKLA. - (May 7, 2009) - Coleman (www.colemanhvacdealer.com) provides a complete line of home comfort products that meet the high-efficiency requirements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). This bill combines spending and tax incentives to move the economy forward by investing in infrastructure and increasing energy efficiency of residential/commercial buildings in America.

Specifically for the HVAC business, this legislation makes a number of important changes to the existing tax incentives for homeowners who make qualified improvements on high-efficiency HVAC products and equipment in their primary residences. Overall, the tax credits have been increased up to 30 percent of the installed cost of those improvements, or up to a total of $1,500 for residential HVAC products installed from Jan. 1, 2009, through Dec. 31, 2010.

The revised criteria for qualifying residential HVAC equipment, under Section 1121 of the ARRA legislation, are as follows.

  • A natural gas, propane or oil furnace rated at 95 percent AFUE or higher.
  • Any furnace equipped with an advanced main air circulating fan that uses no more than 2 percent of the total furnace energy use.
  • A central air conditioner that achieves the highest efficiency tier established by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency as in effect on Jan. 1, 2009 (which is 16 SEER or higher, 13 EER or higher rating). Previously, the criteria were 15 SEER, 12.5 EER, which is no longer valid.
  • An electric air source heat pump that achieves the highest efficiency tier established by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency as in effect on Jan. 1, 2009 (which is 15 SEER or higher, 12.5 EER or higher, 8.5 HSPF or higher rating). Previously, the criteria were 15 SEER, 13 EER, 9 HSPF as stated in the text of the legislation rather than being tied to the CEE highest efficiency tier level for electric air source heat pumps.
"All Coleman 33-inch condensing furnace models exceed the minimum 95 percent AFUE requirements for these tax credits in 2009," said Brian Michael, Coleman brand manager. "In addition, 12 different gas-fired residential furnace models achieve 97 to 98 percent AFUE, making them the most efficient in the industry. For split-system air conditioners and heat pumps, the expansion of the Coleman LX series and Echelon series provides more models at higher efficiency levels than ever before."

Michael added: "When the Federal Tax Credits are combined with Coleman's industry-leading consumer rebate program, which offers up to $1,700 cash back, 6-months same-as-cash financing options, competitive warranties, reduced energy bills, improved comfort and any applicable local utility rebates, our dealer network is able to provide an array of sustainable, high-efficiency home comfort systems that should be an easy sell."

Coleman is offering Federal Tax Credit Certificates for customers who purchase qualifying heating and cooling products for their home. The certificates are downloadable from the Coleman Web site at http://www.colemanac.com/homeowners/epa_cert/index.asp and list all Coleman residential gas furnaces, air handlers, air conditioners and heat pumps that are eligible for tax credits. Coleman will update the certificates as new residential heating and cooling products are introduced throughout 2009.

Homeowners are not required to submit the 2009 Federal Tax Credit Certificates to the IRS as part of their tax returns. Taxpayers should keep copies of invoices and receipts for documenting their actual expenditures, but only need to file Form 5695 with their tax returns to get the tax credits. Before filling for tax credits on any of the listed models, it is always recommended that homeowners/taxpayers consult with a tax professional to review the provisions of the ARRA and application in reference to Section 25C of the Internal Revenue Code.

The following Web sites offer additional information about the tax credits:

More information about Coleman products that are eligible for the tax credit, as well as a tax credit FAQ, are available at: http://www.colemanac.com/homeowners/epa_cert/index.asp.

Johnson Controls Expands York® LX and Latitude™ Series with Addition of 14.5 SEER Heat Pump

Mid-efficiency heat pump delivers increased energy savings year-round

NORMAN, OKLA. - (May 4, 2009) - Johnson Controls (http://www.johnsoncontrols.com), the global multi-industrial leader in energy efficiency, introduces a 14.5 SEER heat pump to its York® (www.yorkupg.com) LX and Latitude™ Series of mid-efficiency air conditioners and heat pumps.

In addition to a higher SEER, the heat pump features a heating season performance factor (HSPF) as high as 9.0 and is ENERGY STAR® qualified. A demand defrost system further reduces energy costs by cycling the unit into defrost mode only when it is needed.

"These new heat pumps promise energy savings at a time when energy conservation is top-of-mind for many homeowners," said Jeff Hurt, York brand manager. "Just as important, many of the new LX and Latitude Series heat pumps qualify for the new federal tax credit as well as most local utility rebates, delivering additional savings to homeowners. Check the unit’s technical guide to verify that a particular model qualifies."

Available in 1.5- to 5-ton capacities, the 14.5 SEER heat pump uses environmentally friendly
R-410A refrigerant and a scroll compressor protected by the simultaneous operation of high-pressure and low-pressure relief valves and a temperature sensor. Features like sound blankets and swept-wing condenser fans reduce sound to as low as 70.1 dB, and louvered side panels on the LX provide superior coil protection.

Installation time and costs are reduced by easy power and control wiring connections. Servicing the unit is easy, too, thanks to fully exposed refrigerant connections and a single panel covering the electric controls. In addition, long-life permanently lubricated motor bearings need no annual servicing.

York® products from Johnson Controls, Inc. include energy-efficient, residential central air-conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces and accessories and innovative light-commercial, packaged heating and cooling systems marketed through a national distribution network and delivered to home- and building-owners through qualified York heating and cooling dealers.
